dumlen delaus (which
espy_no_matsuri translated as the d3ath of dumle, but I'd rather translate as the croakin' of dumle): The other person responsible for this interest (
espy_no_matsuri) says that we both wanted to add a Harry Potter spoiler to our interests, but were too kind to spoil the last book, and so spoiled the penultimate one instead. All I remember is "DUMLEN DELAUS lol!" "Awesome!" "TO LIVEJOURNAL?" "YES.".
...I'm not saying hers wasn't the reasoning behind it! I'm just saying I have absolutely no recollection of it. XD
in-between places: To use recent and commercial examples, Mononoke. Coraline, perhaps. Also: xxxHOLiC. But I feel this is too pointing. It should be impossible to describe.
mättö (....a "heaping"? "dumping"?): The name is by no means official. It's a tradition for May 1st in some very small circles, to which I've belonged in the past, and just might belong, still. It's what happens when you take a huge bowl and add meringue and whipped cream and chocolate sauce and whipped cream and meringue and chocolate sauce and whipped cream and meringue-- you get the idea (the process of making it is half of the fun!). At first it tastes good. Then you throw up.
It's in my interests partly because I want to see who else has it added, partly because otherwise my interests lacked umlaut, partly because the treat itself is the personification of sinfully delicious.
rimsky-korsakoff: If we're talking about playing technique, I'm classically taught, but in everything else I'm a folk musician through and through. Be it theory* or [historical] knowledge**. My skills in the latter were improved a bit by an anime called Princess Tutu. (That one has many things going for it, like the story within the story... within the story? thing and some very meta stuff about free will and choices.)
The one thing I just might like best about the series is the soundtrack, which is entirely composed of classical music. The climax of the series is accompanied by Tchaikovsky's Waltz of the Flowers, but there are also many more obscure works played during its course. Around halfway through the anime part of Rimsky-Korsakoff's Sheherazade plays, and I think it was when I first watched it, that I found my true love.
The Kalendar Prince makes me cry.
I'm probably a bad person for saying he's one of my favourite composers because of just one piece, but I'm wary of exploring his other works. I might be disillusioned.
towels: The requisite Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy interest, because I adored those books when I was younger. Nowadays the flame has much diminished, but the story still holds a special place in my heart. Own the whole work in two languages. Watched the tv series. Watched the movie, laughed a lot. And carried a towel with me last towel day. ~_^
ukifune: Being a song by the J-rock/punk band GO!GO!7188. The most perfect fusion of Japanese folk music instruments and electric guitars that exists, I'd wager. A few years ago this song introduced me to their music, and I still enjoy them, which is more than I can say about the vast, vast majority of Japanese popular music I've liked in the past. The song itself is one of the few songs constantly on my playlist. None of their other works have reached the same level. Part of my opinion might be because of nostalgia value, but honestly I think it's just that good.
Ukifune herself is apparently a character from Genji monogatari, and a translator of the song compared her to Hamlet's Ophelia. This also pleases me, but as I haven't finished reading the former or even started reading the latter, that meaning is quite secondary.
whales: Weeell, sometimes people have strong feelings about certain animals. Trying to understand and/or feel the power of nature, going back to the simpler origins of life, particularly in this overly technological world, that sort of thing. Rather than wolves or pandas or snakes or, I don't know, dinosaurs (!! dinosaurs!), whales are the ones that resonate with me the strongest. I'm not a "fan" or anything, I don't collect postcards, plushies or wallpapers about them, nor do I follow what's going on with the species (all of them) on the seas of this planet. Actually, I think that earlier selling speech was maybe a little too grand and philosophical, it could be a lot more superficial than that.
--That said, thanks to this I just spent almost a full minute thinking about huge, majestic beasts swimming in the depths of a midnight ocean, and suddenly felt a moment of inner peace. That's why "whales" is there.
*"'Third mode of f# melodic minor'*** wtf. --Heeeeey this sounds familiar I've practiced this before!"
** [before the opera] "I'm not sure paying so much to see Macbeth is such a good idea, I don't know it and operas are pretty hard to enjoy the first time around. :("
[after the opera] "...Well, now I know where all those songs were from."
*** For all I know this might be musical equivalent of pig latin. I don't know the terminology in English. :/ --No, that's misleading. I just don't know the terminology, period.
Highlight of the day: a science magazine announces that second hand smoking is harmful to pets as well. ...No, really? Next they'll tell us that if you go walk the dog in the rain, the dog'll get wet, too!
