Kartikeya was a one-hit kill.

Day 05: The pairing with the least chemistry?

Kaywinnit "Kaylee" Lee and Simon Tam from Firefly.

Aww, how cute they look! Not pictured:

They can't talk about anything due to their very different backgrounds. Their personalities don't fit together. They have nothing in common. And they keep hurting each other. Not even because they care about each other, they just don't know how to communicate, and never learn. What is the most natural thing for one to say leaves the other disappointed and angry.

Case in point: Kaylee is marvelling at a pretty object in a tourist store, thinking that Simon (which at this point translates to: the only available and likable male on board of the ship) might like it. You know, buttering him up. Simon enters the store, looks at the same object from his educated and sophisticated point of view and announces it trash. Kaylee feels like shit for thinking that it was nice.

Being wanted a wanted fugitive, used to life in luxury (not necessarily for the luxury itself, but because it's what feels home to him), traveling in an old and kind of dubious ship has come as quite a culture shock to Simon. He also has his hands full of taking care of his troublesome sister, who is currently creating havoc in the store. So he makes an off-hand comment about the crappy ship and how it would be nice if life was easier.

Kaylee, who loves the ship as her own child, takes personal offense at this, deciding that since Simon thinks the ship is shit, he must also think that the people who like the ship are shit, and pretty much tells Simon to fuck off in a very mean way, adding her own drama to the situation, where the other person already has enough drama to deal with.

KAYLEE IS PERSONALLY HURT. SIMON HAS NO TIME TO DEAL WITH THIS.

And they keep on trying out of sheer stubbornness, trying to fit these blocks together. It's difficult to watch. Not to say that it wasn't realistic in a way, but if we were meant to be supportive, it failed horribly. I, at least, followed them with a growing sense of horror.

The worst part is that I love Kaylee, but this relationship makes me... not-love her very much. Because the subtext is that Simon, while not even being in any sort of initiating position in the relationship in the first place should change as a person to fit Kaylee's daydreams about him. It's never questioned that there might be something wrong with Kaylee pursuing an idiotic relationship and never compromising on her part.

If I remember correctly, the scene in the picture ends with Simon saying something that Kaylee takes offense at, Kaylee being hurt and Simon feeling guilty about... being himself. But that's how 90% of their scenes together end.

(Ghost answer for MegaTen:

To minimize spoilers, Jun. A homosexual character whose sexuality is not the defining part of his character, whose sexuality is not belittled or really even hidden, who plays a critical part in the plot throughout the whole game, who we are meant to care for and sympathize with, and whose important and complex(!) primary motivations have absolutely nothing to do with anything sexuality-related? but mom that's unpossible

THIS WAS JUST GUSHING ABOUT THE GAY THING BUT I ALSO REALLY LIKE HIM AS A CHARACTER OKAY.

"Thinking only of you.")
