Day 23: A crazy pretty reasonable love triangle/quadrilateral that worked out great could have gone terribly yet didn't?
(I remember being quite satisfied with how Honey & Clover ended its love tangles, but I watched it such a long time ago that I only remember that faint sense of satisfaction.)

(I don't ship it as a threesome, though.)
It was going on strong for as long as it had time. (lol actual quote from FF7 game booklet: "Aeris Gainsborough. Her unusual abilities enable her to use magic but she seems more interested in the deepening love triangle between herself, Cloud and Tifa.".) It's been a while since I played the game so I can't remember much of the details. Only going into Aerith and Tifa here, because they are the ones who should "traditionally" be at odds, yet aren't. (In such a simple way, at least. They do compete, but it's not mean-spirited.)
Aerith: Tifa? Nice to meet you. I'm Aerith. Cloud's told me a lot about you.
Tifa: ...And you are? Hey you're the one with Cloud in the park...
Aerith: Right, with Cloud.
Tifa: Oh...
Aerith: Don't worry. We just met. It's nothing.
Annnd that's more or less it. Aerith and Tifa are nice to each other and bond instead of fighting. Aerith is there to save Tifa before she even knows who she is, Tifa is the first to chase after Aerith after she is kidnapped. They hang out together and speak with each other about things other than Cloud. And I like how Cloud is an active participant in the relationship, rather than a third party free of personality whose only function is to be fought over. He's right there with them.

When it ended, it didn't end because of the love triangle, and the turmoil that Aerith's death caused made the other two stronger people in the end. (The death scene sealed the deal for me. I always had Tifa in my party, and her reaction to Aerith's death was the most heartbreaking. "Happiness" that now she alone can have Cloud doesn't even enter the picture.)
All in all, the whole thing was tastefully done.
...It also worked out great in the sense that it ended with Cloud/Tifa. Craaaazy stuff, that.

This comic is a pretty amazing summary of what I like about this love triangle, provided you know enough Japanese to follow what's going on.
Other fanart: Three lovely ladies (love Cloud's left hand there)
Aerith ♥ Tifa (this artist's style is godly)
Everyone should love Tifa
Tifa is a fine driver
...is a fine driver
Pfft, choices (go with both, Kuraudo)
Cloud and Tifa (original game)
Planetarium (I love this artist's style. It's simple but effective)
Wheelchair (I always read it as Cloud being the only thing Tifa has left of home. Not "female character A being hopelessly dependent on male character B")
Seventh Heaven
Cloud birthday pile (with extra Zack)
Pretty much the only fanartist who had a healthy reaction to Tifa being in Dissidia instead of Aerith
Oh, I guess I should put some Aerith/Cloud here too
Never quite caught you
For other fanworks I'd recommend LJ user fftarot's FF7 drabbles (Cloud and Tifa's parts). Tiny but perfect.
(Cecil, Rosa and Kain are also living quite happily inside my head, but that's where they are. Inside my head.)
DAY 23: Favorite soundtrack?
VI's soundtrack is the most... cohesive, it recycles the themes in such a good way.
Setzer -> Epitaph
Tina -> Awakening -> Protect Them!
Edgar and Mash -> Coin of Fate
Aria -> Celes
Lock -> Forever, Rachel
They were a joy to discover. And due to the strong musical themes, VI's ending medley is still among the most moving piece of game music I have heard.
But I like the general sound of VII the best.
(MegaTen: ...I don't really like the music in any SMT game. Stylistically Persona 4's soundtrack fits the game the best, and yes, that makes me like it.)
