today's theme: crossdressing

Day 03: A pairing that needs to happen now?

Threesome, not a pairing, but who cares. Natsume/Taki/Tanuma, aka the Trio of Social Awkwardness, from Natsume Yuujinchou, manga version (better than its anime counterpart).

They are all socially inept kids, but good kids, and lonely all for their own reasons. Good luck that they found each other. The series is really about Natsume and his loneliness, isn't it? By the time they all get together, Natsume already has people to love (his parents, Nishimura and Kitamoto) and people to share his worries with (Natori, with a caution), but Taki and Tanuma are special because they can be both. Similar in status and experience.

The manga got me sold on Natsume/Taki in the chapter where the two of them spend all their free time hanging out with a strange child. Natsume is having the time of his life, and wonders if that's what family should feel like, and if so, would he maybe want to try it out in the future himself? How much more heartwarming can you get?

Natsume and Tanuma have had a friendship going on for a longer time now, but they are still somewhat uneasy around other. But not because they don't like each other (they do), and not because they would rather be doing something else (they wouldn't), but because they're scared they'll make the other go away. (Natsume's live in a nutshell.)

I love Tanuma's sadness of not getting to see the same scenery as Natsume. The scene where Tanuma is talking about the pond's reflection, Natsume sees the pond itself, and Tanuma slowly realizes this, never really left me.

Taki and Tanuma don't have that many scenes together, neither being the main character, but there is likely to be more, and for now we know that they do get along well and voluntarily hang out together. Taki has extended her circle of it's-a-youkai-get-in-the-car, previously just her and Natsume, to include Tanuma (she even made him a creepy-looking charm!), and Tanuma thinks Taki's crossdressing looks cute, which surely is a fine thing in any budding relationship.

Together they are silly and awkward and wonderful 24/7.

A fic that I read yesterday reminded me of another pairing that needs to happen now, or rather, needed to happen three years ago: Mitsuru/Yukari from Persona 3. I mean, come on. COME. ON.

Surely the game was actually the story of these two wonderful ladies, their conflicts and coming to understand one another. They are drawn together, throughout the game. Sadly, both had to fill the role of ~potential romantic interest~ to the male main character, so their story didn't get the ending it deserved (eventual hook-up and the ever after, I'm sure). The world has to settle for increasing amounts of subtext in drama cd's, manga, whatever.

DAY 03: Favorite protagonist?

Kuraudo Sutoraifu, protagonist of Final Fantasy VII. (Not necessarily my favourite character among the protagonists, but definitely my favourite as a protagonist.)

I'm having a hard time trying to articulate this! Cloud is the central figure in both what happens and what is told, which is more than what can be said for several other FF protagonists (wait, who is the main character of X again? Does Tina serve any purpose besides setting the plot in motion?). His transformation throughout the game has meaning, and the plot unravels at his pace. (And a what a fine unraveling that is.) I like his story in general: he's no one special and never was, even though the game tries to trick you into thinking otherwise. He's not good material for a protagonist of an epic fantasy, no matter how he tries to present himself in the beginning. Many bonus points for being an utter dork.

(Ghost answer for MegaTen:

Either Tatsuya from Persona 2 Innocent Sin or Serph from Digital Devil Saga, those two being the only ones among SMT protagonists with a clear enough personality. ...Serph's hips don't lie, and Tatsuya makes motorcycle noises at demons.

I'm also very fond of Raidou McCoolHat Kuzunoha, eh fights gangsters naked in a bathhouse and doesn't afraid of anything.)

"...Serph's hips don't lie"

in lack of better wording, amen to that
