bakumatsu kikansetsu i ro ha ni ho he to (up to episode 13)
Dear scriptwriters,
that isn't how romance is done. Feelings from Kakunojo to Youjirou - did I blink and miss something? There was nothing that could have made her fall for him, and no, the rescue in the second episode doesn't count! At all! He was around her occasionally, said maybe two words. The love story of the century!
The fight scenes are hardly impressive enough for a series like this! The only positive thing about the fights was the bladearms vs firearms battle that took most of episode eight. For that I honestly must tip my hat, the last time I saw such impressive sword vs gun action was in the last episode of Cowboy Bebop.
The plot is mostly boring and goes nowhere, or is incomprehensible. Actually, is there a plot? Darling Soutetsu who seemed like a nice character in the beginning seems to block any information by being needlessly cryptic! There's a line between being enigmatic and being just plain irritating!
Most of the characters give me no real reason to care about them. In the latest episode Ebisu, the one of the theatre troupe that I liked best, died, but I couldn't bring myself to care. I wasn't even sure what his name was until then. Kakunojo, who seemed pretty okay at the beginning, is seriously starting to annoy me, and I can't even say why. Maybe it's the way she constantly needs to be rescued.
The only good things I have to say so far are that the music is good most of the time, the main character is actually surprisingly likeable (he has tender feelings for father, big brother, and mentor figures ♥), which I really didn't expect from the first episodes, and that Okita Souji and his death were very well done. (Damn, and also all the traditional Japanese singing and the theatre - this list of positives is starting to look too long.)
I had heard that the show promises much but delivers little, and that it takes a nosedive after the beginning, so I didn't expect to feel this aggravated on this personal a level, but here I am.
At least there's still Kanna. Baby you're so fine, so fine.
