I want to draw! I've been drawing some fanart lately, but I usually stop pretty soon as I remember that our scanner is not exactly well. One could call it a dying machine, even. Maybe it's sad, not to be able to do what you like without feedback, but I like hearing people comment on my works. Mom's comments are always so dull, dad's only slightly better, and my brother and sister, who would and could comment intellectually, have both moved away. :(

But, to the more important part of this post. Ramble about a minor NPC from Final Fantasy VI! Loosely connected to the theme of drawing fanart!

I've started to like Rachel. The woman who very pointedly is not there - she dies years before the game begins, and somehow most of her screentime, including flashbacks, is spent dying again. I don't know how she acts in the Japanese game, but I imagine she's a normal girl, nothing special.

So why does it seem that I have confused her with Daryl(/Darril)? I was listening to her "theme song" and decided to draw her. On one of the treasure hunts with Lock, no less. She ended up looking like a less sharp version of Daryl - amused and strong.

Maybe it's not that far-fetched? Canon facts, when combined, form the image of young woman who is very non-traditional in a very, very quiet way. She goes on expeditions alone with her boyfriend. In a game where all females wear dresses and skirts (Celes' bathsuit really doesn't help the case), she wears loose pants (...this is extremely important!). She's pretty damn strong, to let go and set free like that. I like that.

Without noticing, I've created a whole character from the little scraps we've been given. In my head, Rachel was awesome. When she was younger, she acted like a boy. Sadly, as she grew older, she slowly became more and more of a feminine woman, sometimes talking loosely only with those who she knew very well. In her older days, she didn't protest loudly to injustice. She was fair, but only to people who knew to expect it from her. She was about a year older than Lock, and they had known each other for over half their lives. They were actually not engaged, just in love. Also, she was totally a gypsy in a past life. It was Rachel who introduced Lock to the completely overdone sense of jewellery he nowadays has.

Yeah, I like her.

...Of course, the real, subconscious reason for my liking of her could be because Forever Rachel is the prettiest piece of music in the whole game. Seriously.
