the exception makes the rule

I was browsing my older entries when I found this. After moments of "omg I didn't even remember that character anymore", "hey, why isn't so-and-so here?" and "of course, so-and-so would never make it to the list now", I decided that it needed a counterpart.

Presenting the same thing, only with a little more testosterone. (And just ten was too hard for me. Top ten and honourable mentions ahead. And stuff.)

Honourable mentions, female:

Nakahara Sunako (from Perfect Girl Evolution) for resembling Sadako from Ring. For enjoying blood and horror movies and having a skeleton for a friend.

Minashiro Tsubaki (from Soukyuu no Fafner) for being kick-ass and having all the power without being annoying about it.

Makabe Akane (also from Soukyuu no Fafner) for being the most wonderful mother in any fictional medium, for being a damn high-ranking officer in an army, for making clay pots, for keeping her last name when marrying.

Matsumoto Rangiku (from Bleach) for the way she treats her own body. No, really. For general kick-assery as well.

Soi Fong (also from Bleach) for being a ninja!

Rue (from Princess Tutu) for being the character with the most development in the series. For making me love her.

(spoiler)Okuzaki Akira (from Mai-HiME) for... seriously, do I need to say it?

And a trio from the Gundam SEED-verse:

Fllay Allster - a despicable, close-minded, racistic, stuck-up bitch who paid for her flaws for way too high a price.

Stellar Louisser, who cannot be blamed for any of her actions. She never did anything wrong.

Meer Campbell, who was everything Lacus should have been.

Honourable mentions, male:

D (from Petshop of Horrors) for wearing dresses. For giving humanity a kick in the ass.

Minashiro Soushi-baby (from Soukyuu no Fafner) needs lots of hugs for too many reasons to name. Actually, he should be in the top ten.

Makabe Fumihiko (also from Soukyuu no Fafner). At this point Fafner is a series where my liking for a character is purely instinctal. Anyway. For changing his last name when marrying. For being "too lenient".

Jack Sparrow (from The Pirates of Caribbean) for being played by Johnn- I mean, for making me laugh, and for the hand gestures.

Anotsu Kagehisa (from Blade of the Immortal) for being interesting, dammit.

Koumyou Sanzo (from Saiyuki and Saiyuki Reload) for being a complete loony. And for occasionally sprouting lessons larger than life in between all the being-enlightened-ness.

Taishakuten (from RG Veda) because, for all his sadistic tendencies and being the big bad boss (>D), he should've been a main character in a love story. Also, the pearls.

Sohma Shigure (from Fruits Basket) for being subtle.

Rociel (from Angel Sanctuary) for all the injustices he suffers, for breaking the hearts of all the readers in the last volume.

Kira Izuru (from Bleach) for having something seriously wrong in his head.

My top ten favourite male characters

10. Touya Akira from Hikaru no Go is a character I remember liking maybe a little too much, for reasons I can't quite name. Being a too-serious little boy had something to do with it, as did the hideous fashion sense. (Scroll down for details.)

09. Morita Shinobu from Honey & Clover is the rare male character I don't feel guilty for thinking as role-model material. (Which is screwed up because in reality he's a character no one should look up to.) He can get away with anything. He's like a force of nature, in many ways.

08. Franz d'Epinay from Gankutsuou is the most selfless character I've ever encountered, possibly barring even Katan (from Angel Sanctuary).

07. Ichimaru Gin from Bleach - what can I say, I like 'em sly and evil and with closed eyes. Whatever crazy attraction he aroused in me shot up to a ridiculous level when Rangiku (see above!) was introduced. Maybe I'll stop liking him when the series ends and there are no more mysteries to be solved, I don't know.

06. Lo- A- Be- The Fool from the Farseer and Tawny Man trilogies. *cough*

05. Severus Snape from the Harry Potter series. I liked this man from the start. He was interesting. He never played quite the role one expected him to. As the series progressed, he got more backstory, more depth... As it is, he's the only character in the story that really holds my attention anymore. I like a few of them, but it's not the same thing.

I want to read the last book. Like, now.

04. Rey za Burrel from Gundam SEED Destiny broke my heart, but it happens sometimes. What makes this one so special is that I never saw it coming. He woke in me the mothering instinct I never knew I had. I'd like for him to get a childhood he never really had, many, many friends that he never really knew how to spend time with, and a family. Five seconds of having one doesn't really cut it, you know. Damn, he's the SEED version of Soushi. o_O

03. Clow Reed from various CLAMP works has the attitude. And the glasses to back it up, too.

02. Griffith from Berserk. I, for one, welcome our new psychotic overlords. >D

01. Why oh why do I not have my kazuki icon uploaded? Makabe Kazuki (from a series that's been mentioned in this post four times already ♥) has awesome parents which, by some damn lucky draw, means that he's exponentially awesome. Part of my liking him has to do with his voice actor (who, in my humble opinion, gives the best performance I've ever in all my years of listening to anime witnessed. ever), but that's not even close to being it all.

Kazuki is an exceptional character for me to like because, well, he's the main character. I never like the main character best, unless it's one of those crazy cases where the main character is the only character. Sometimes I like the main characters somewhat, but usually I dislike them. Sometimes even loathe. Fafner has a gazillion characters that I love on various leves, and Kazuki remains the one. WTF.

I don't really have analysis for this (on the surface he's the stereotypical main character, but if you get a little under it, he's as atypical as they get? ahahahaha the eye incident). All I can say is, I've never known a love like this before. Don't you ever stop shining. Oh baby, oh baby.
